Explorers Club Trip Tour Highlights
The Silk Road has inspired human imagination and avarice for centuries. This ancient trading route linked the empires of the east with wealthy Mediterranean trading ports. In addition to luxury goods such as silks and spices, trade throughout this region led to the development of unique artistic styles, combining eastern and western influences. The lucrative route was fiercely fought over by powerful empires who left behind grand cities, often destroyed by one another. Many of the remaining landmarks are mere shadows of their former glory, however their intrigue is undeniable. Begin in Ashgabat—a city completely ensconced in marble. You’ll visit awe-inspiring mosques, bustling bazaars, and explore the remains of a Parthian kingdom. Visit the last surviving monuments of the Seljuk Dynasty in Konya Urgench. Weave through Khiva where you’ll see spectacular examples of Islamic architecture, wander the former fortress of Khiva’s rulers and visit the hallowed courtyard of Khiva’s patron saint. Drive through red sand desert, stopping at the mighty Oxus River, to important outposts including Bukhara and Samarkand. Your journey will end in the grand city of Tashkent.
