American Trade Hotel
In the last couple years, Panama City’s Casco Viejo neighborhood, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has transformed into one of the hippest spots around, thanks in part to the opening of the design-driven American Trade Hotel. With its mid-century modern furnishings, intricate tiling, and traditional art pieces like woven wall hangings, the property has become a destination in and of itself. The project was a collaboration between Ace Hotel Group, Conservatorio, and Commune—three firms that know style. Together they transformed the shell of a 1917 apartment building into a handsome hideaway for discerning travelers. There is a peaceful courtyard with Parisian umbrellas, plenty of generous windows and Havana-style balconies that look out on the creative bustle of the old city, and covetable period pieces around every corner. Lounge by the petite rooftop pool sipping Tanqueray, relax to the rhythms of street performers floating past your balcony, or don your Panama hat to enjoy the scene in the lively café.
