Casa No Tempo
An hour from Lisbon in the striking Alentejo region is Casa No Tempo. This is Portugal at its best: wide-open, arid countryside, thoroughbred horses, and white-washed rooms bathed in sunlight. The Casa No Tempo family farm has been passed down for generations with only one stipulation: that the property be looked after so that the next generations have a peaceful and timeless place to inherit. The current owners enlisted architect Manuel Aires Mateus to breathe new life into the grounds. Working with the family, he enhanced the original structures without erasing history. Large windows and oversized doorways unite the indoor spaces with the land. Minimal, all-white linen furnishings add to the sense of vastness. Floors laid with local clay tiles add warmth, as does a roaring fireplace in the lounge. There are three docile horses and two ponies available to take guests hacking through the oak forests or rambling through the scrubby hills. For fishermen, the property provides equipment for bass and carp fishing on the lakes. Lounge by the chic pool when the sun is up. At night, the skies are overrun with stars.
