Ol Donyo Lodge
For conservation-minded travelers, this is one of our favorite places to stay in Africa. A member of the Relais & Châteaux collection of hotels, it’s one of favorites if you’re just seeking a spectacular bush experience. ol Donyo Lodge is set on 300,000 acres of communal Maasai-owned land spanning Chyulu Hills National Park, Amboseli, and Tsavo West National Park in Kenya. ol Donyo Lodge stands out to Absolute Travel for its steadfast dedication to conservation, rich history, breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, heart-pounding wildlife encounters, and dedicated passionate staff. Guests of ol Donyo Lodge can expect morning and evening game drives, hikes through the volcanic hillsides, cultural visits to the local Maasai villages, and even an elephant stampede (the elephant migration goes through here). The lodge consists of ten expansive guest suites in six stand-alone villas.
No two spaces are of the same design, but all have a dramatic view of the archetypal African savanna and its flat-top acacia trees with Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. The décor is a wonderful balance of contemporary and traditional with a strong sense of place–an essential ingredient of an outstanding bush lodge. Art from around Africa coupled with the photography of Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher create a commanding space under the high thatch roofs. All suites have a private pool, lounge, verandah, indoor and outdoor showers, double washbasins, flush toilet and bath, and “starbed.” Don’t miss sleeping under the African sky on your private starbed and learning firsthand about their smart approach to conservation.
