The Base Project
About The Base Project
The Base Project is a socially-motivated fashion brand building a bridge between artisans in the developing world and the US fashion market. Through their fashion products they create jobs and invest in community development projects.
We love Namibia for the stark beauty of its landscape: the storied coastlines, silent deserts, massive sand dunes, and bands of green and gold are dramatic, unexpected, and unforgettable. Here, nature reigns supreme and guides the pulse of the country from the Kalahari Desert to the Atlantic Ocean. However beautiful, the delicate ecosystem can be a challenging environment for people and creatures to thrive within.
In recognition of these concerns, twin brothers Chris and Doug Akin launched The Base Project. In the Kunene Region of Namibia, The Base Project partner’s with artisan cooperatives comprised of the Himba and Herero tribe members who utilize their available resources and natural inspiration toward an artisan enterprise. Together, the Base Project and Kunene artisans create up-cycled bracelets using recycled water pipes that are hand carved with traditional designs inspired by the wildlife, landscape, and rich tribal history of the region.
When we first saw the bracelets we were instantly enamored with the bold designs. When we turned them over and read the inscription bearing The Base Project story, we were in love! It is only fitting that a country known for its unique beauty would inspire equally striking goods. What is more, these beautiful bracelets aid the environment by making use of recycled materials which may otherwise occupy landfills. And their production provides the Namibian artisans who make them additional income for school fees, health care, and food. We are proud to “wear our impact!” and be a part of this wonderful project.
Cofounder Chris says, “Absolute Travel is the quintessential partner for The Base Project. Their team is committed to products with a social mission and they are passionate about sharing stories of African artisans with their community of travelers. Wear Your Impact!”
