South Africa’s complex history is as compelling as its magnificent natural beauty, but its rich cultural heritage and complicated past is perhaps too often overlooked by visitors eager to see its famous wildlife reserves and big game. This tour attempts to give visitors an introduction to the history of South Africa, from the artistic achievements of its earliest inhabitants to modern-day attempts to the deal with the legacy of the apartheid system, while also showcasing its scenic charm. Start with three nights in Cape Town, with guided trips to Cape Point and the wine region as well as a private helicopter city tour that includes a visit to a township. From Cape Town, fly to the Kalahari Desert for three nights amid the red sand and Korannaberg Mountains. Enjoy two full days of game viewing activities in this region known for its unique plant and animal life and home to the rare black rhino. From the Kalahari, fly to Johannesburg where you will spend two nights. While in Johannesburg, visit the most famous South African township, Soweto, where Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu make their homes, and the moving Apartheid Museum. Fly from Johannesburg to the Manyeleti Game Reserve to enjoy two full days of game viewing and guided walks. Fly to Johannesburg where you will depart for your onward flight. |
