| This comprehensive tour includes a variety of regions, from ultra-modern Tokyo to the ancient traditional mountain towns of Takayama and Furashiki, steeped in history. Begin with Tokyo city touring and an excursion to sacred Nikko to see Toshugu Shrine and the other area attractions. Next visit Kamakura, where hundreds of Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines each have their own fascinating story. A highlight is spending a night in Hakone at the luxurious Gora Kadan ryokan, widely considered the best traditional inn in Japan. Continue to Osaka, your base for a day small group outing to the pilgrimage site of Mt. Koya. After two nights in Osaka, continue to Hiroshima, with a stop at Himeji-jo, one of the few original medieval castles remaining in Japan, en route. In Hiroshima, tour the Peace Memorial Park and the scenic island of Miyajima, with its 12th century shrine built in honor of the Goddess of the Sea to protect fisherman. Continue to the traditional towns of Kanazawa and Takayama, where you will find distinctive regional cuisine, folk crafts, and ancient farm homes built in the Gassho style. The final stop on the tour is Kyoto, where highlights include a Buddhist vegetarian temple lunch, a daytrip visit to Nara, and a day at the legendary Miho Museum. Plenty of time will also be spent visiting the most important temples and neighborhoods in Kyoto, like Kinkakuji Temple, Heian Shrine, and the Ryoanji Temple. | |||
