Private Luxury Travel - Deluxe India hotels - Oberoi Amarvilas TheTaj Mahal Hotel
Delhi

Fit for a maharaja, this 12-story property is located in an exclusive residential area and is intended to reflect the historical Mughal era of architecture. Guests enter an impressive white marble lobby filled with enormous woven rugs, Indian artifacts, and intricate golden inlay work. Most guests bypass a traditional check-in and head straight to their rooms, which are spacious and feature high ceilings, panoramic views of Delhi, and sparkling marble bathrooms with sunken tubs. The service and hospitality are impeccable and six different restaurants, from casual to formal, mean that it can be hard to leave the premises.
Private Luxury Travel - Deluxe India hotels - Taj Mahal Palace The Imperial
Delhi

One of our very favorite properties in Delhi, the Imperial Hotel is like the stately grande dame of the city: elegant, glamorous, and much respected. Built in 1933, it has a somewhat unconventional architecture that melds Victorian and British colonial influences with a splash of Art Deco style thrown in for good measure. The façade is crisp and white, and the entrance is lined with imported palm trees, lending it a dose of Hollywood splendor. Guest rooms and suites are perfectly appointed, with Indian art and colonial touches, and a swimming pool, fitness center, and numerous restaurants and bars are available for guests to use. An important feature of the hotel is its location: shopping, museums, and other sights are only a short walk away.

Private Luxury Travel - Deluxe India hotels - Taj Lake PalaceThe Taj Mahal Palace & Tower
Bombay

An architectural marvel right across from the Gateway of India, this historic hotel has been the place to stay since its grand opening in 1903. The interior combines Moorish, Oriental and Florentine styles, dramatized with vaulted ceilings, onyx columns, graceful archways and hand-woven silk carpets. Guest rooms are located in two wings, the Palace and Tower, each representing a different era. We recommend the sea-facing Heritage Wing Rooms: these luxurious rooms have been refurbished with contemporary amenities, but the elegance of the past can be seen in the antique furniture, and artwork and artifacts that line the walls of the corridors and living spaces.

Private Luxury Travel - Deluxe India hotels - Umaid Bhawan PalaceThe Taj Umaid Bhawan Palace
Jodhpur

Completed in 1943, this majestic yellow sandstone Art Deco palace was originally constructed for the Jodhpur royal family. Indeed, the 347 rooms do feel fit for a maharaja, and the surrounding 26 acres of gardens, lawns, and courtyards are lovely for an evening stroll. The impressive lobby has vaulted 100-foot-high ceilings and the guest rooms are equally grand, decorated in a tasteful Art Deco style that emphasizes clean lines -- and we love the deep marble bathtubs! Restaurants include the Trophy Bar, Risala, and the Pillars, which offers commanding views of Mahrengarh Fort and the city. Be sure to save time for a dip in the Zodiac Pool or have a cocktail on the terrace, overlooking some of the most impressive gardens in Rajasthan.

Private Luxury Travel - Deluxe India hotels - Oberoi RajvilasThe Oberoi Rajvilas
Jaipur

Rajvilas is located on several acres of pristine Rajasthani countryside, just minutes from the region's thriving capital: Jaipur. Once inside this majestic palace-like property, the luxury and elegance of the decor is overwhelming. The rooms and villas are set among sprawling green lawns, with dramatic pools and fountains. The Oberoi Rajvilas is a perfect base for regional touring or simply enjoying the fairytale grounds of the property. Be sure to try out their new spa that offers a variety of western and Ayurvedic body treatments.

Private Luxury Travel - Deluxe India hotels - Aman-i-KhasThe Oberoi Amarvilas
Agra
With spectacular views of the Taj Mahal, no property in Agra can claim a better location than the Oberoi Amarvilas. Guests can watch the changing colors of the great marble structure at sunrise, midday, and at sunset from their elegant rooms. In addition to its unrivalled location, Amarvilas is simply a beautiful property, with white marble floors, richly colorful textiles adorning the walls, and tasteful handicrafts from throughout northern India. We recommend rooms with a private terrace, which allow unadulterated views of the Taj Mahal, and the hotel can arrange a candlelight dinner on the terrace for a truly romantic, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Private Luxury Travel - Deluxe India hotels - Oberoi UdaivilasAman-i-Khas
Rajasthan

Maharajahs in Jaipur once had exclusive hunting rights in what is now Ranthambore National Park, and the area has always been considered a precious national treasure. Now visitors can explore Ranthambore much as the Maharajahs did, in magnificent Mughal style. This Aman property features just ten luxury tents, each of which resembles a spacious mini-hotel, with a series of opulent "rooms" partitioned with cotton drapes. Three separate tents house the dining room, sitting room, and spa treatment area. An outdoor terrace and fireplace provides a comfortable focal point for the property and allows guests to absorb the surrounding natural beauty.

Private Luxury Travel - Deluxe India hotels - Oberoi VanyavilasThe Oberoi Vanyavilas
Rajasthan

Another jewel in the Oberoi's crown, the Vanyavilas features 25 luxury tented-style accommodations adjacent to the famed Ranthambore Tiger Reserve. Designed as a luxury jungle camp, this was the first true resort in any of India's game or wildlife reserves. The "tents" are extremely sumptuous, measuring nearly 800 square feet and elegantly designed with teak flooring, elegant carved wood furniture, large picture windows, canvas tented roof, and a private outdoor lounge surrounded by walled gardens to ensure total privacy. It is from here that guests can try to steal a glimpse of an elusive Bengal tiger, with assistance from an expert guide in one of Vanyavilas custom-built safari vehicles.

Private Luxury Travel - Deluxe India hotels - Coconut LagoonThe Oberoi Udaivilas
Udaipur

Udaivilas, designed to resemble a traditional Rajasthani Palace perched over the banks of Lake Pichola, is intended to be the finest luxury resort in India. Mr. Oberoi dreamed of building this property for many years, and began drafting plans immediately following the success of Rajvilas and Amarvilas. Set in 30 acres of landscaped gardens, fountains and pavilions, this resort has 96 rooms, all of which have private terraces for al fresco dining; most have views of the City Palace and Lake Pichola. Eighteen rooms feature private swimming pools, as do the four Deluxe Suites, and single Maharaja Suite. Once completed, this will be the ideal romantic getaway in India's most enchanting city.

Private Luxury Travel - Deluxe India hotels - Coconut LagoonThe Taj Lake Palace
Udaipur

A 250-year-old white marble palace located right in the middle of Lake Pichola (guests take a boat to and from the hotel), the Taj Lake Palace is one of the most memorable places to stay in India. We recommend staying in a suite to get the full "Lake Palace experience" -- suites are decorated with rich silks, lovely murals, and ornate wooden furniture that pay homage to the building's rich and storied history. Touches like inlaid glass floral motifs around the doorways demonstrate the care that goes into even the smallest details. Sample some of the Indian and international cuisine served at the three restaurants: Amrit Sagar, Jharokha, and Neel Kamal. The Jiva Spa offers Indian rejuvenation therapies ranging from aromatherapy massages to Ayurveda-based techniques.

Kottayam

Coconut Lagoon is an enchanting property located among the narrow waterways and canals of Kerala - this is one of India's most magical natural areas. The resort, which is reached via a tranquil boat journey, is comprised of genuine Kerala-style cottages that are brought over from different parts of the region. This traditional style of accommodation, combined with a modern and luxurious interior, makes Coconut Lagoon a must for anyone traveling to South India.
