If you’ve found yourself impulsively hitting refresh on your phone for notifications or wishing for one night a week of solid, uninterrupted sleep—here’s looking at you, New York—it may be time to book a wellness retreat. Over the winter our Wellness Expert, Christa Russo, was lucky enough to spend seven nights at arguably the best of them, Ananda in the Himalayas. Her takeaway: every New Yorker needs to go.
Why, exactly? Here are just a few reasons: extra glow, regular sleep patterns, feeling lighter with great digestion, developing a clear mind and lasting tools for living better and happier long term. Oh, and you’ll be walking in the footsteps of Gwyneth, Brad, Angelina, and Oprah—the fact that they are all fans says a thing or two.
Not convinced? Before you write this off as just-another-temporary-cleanse and count yourself out, forget what you think you know about wellness retreats for a moment. The thought of eating for your dosha or having your third eye bathed in warm oil may sound intimidating. It’s actually awesome. This former Maharaja’s palace in the foothills of the Himalayas is a luxurious, glittering beacon of results.
Consider this: Christa battled acid reflux for a decade. At Ananda it was gone in a week, and hasn’t come back. One of the best parts: she didn’t utter “I feel stressed out” once during her stay. Neither will you.
Below Christa shares why she loves Ananda in the Himalayas and what to expect during your stay. Curious to learn more? Get in touch here.
In snazzy digs
This beloved wellness spa retreat isn’t about buzzy treatments (although they have some great ones)—it’s about you. You’ll strip away the clutter.
• Go all in and have your pulses taken by the resident Ayurvedic doctor. You’ll be assigned a dosha which will guide the way you eat during your stay (and likely for the rest of your life—your system will hum, you’ll never want to look back). The gourmet wellness chef prepares each guest’s personalized dish using fresh, whole ingredients.
• Elect to go sans-wifi, or at least change your settings to silent.
• Choose to wear weightless white Indian pajamas which are minimal, one of the comfiest outfits around, and will make you appear immediately chic and effervescent. They’ll deliver a crisp set to your suite daily.
Hone your glow
This is the good stuff we all want. A few days in and you’ll be riding the high of internal and external results: dewy, clear skin; bright eyes from sleeping well and decluttering your head space; zero bloat when you wake up; noticing that you’re thinking before you speak; surprising yourself from what you can accomplish physically as you move through yoga sessions with ease and sit quietly in meditation. You’ll be strutting to the Ayurvedic Spa, named Condé Nast Traveler’s Number One Destination Spa India over and over again, for your herbal massage with a literal bounce in your step.
For ever after
This isn’t a while-in-Rome type situation. Although experiential and lovely, the activities you do at Ananda in the Himalayas—whether it’s dining en plein air after a Vedanta lecture, participating in the uplifting sunset ceremony with the orange-robed rishis in nearby Rishikesh, simply hanging by the woodland infinity pool, or having your system rinsed at the spa—are designed to teach you tangible skills for cultivating calm at any moment in your life. Ayurveda, after all, translates to “life knowledge.”
