How does a brand that’s been around for 22 years maintain its cache?
Singita, which has become practically synonymous with luxury African safari, seems to have the answer with the reveal of Singita Ebony Lodge’s renovation. This isn’t your same-day facelift procedure, but a total overhaul, putting Singita Ebony Lodge on the 2015-must-stay list of every well-heeled traveler. We have a soft for Singita Ebony Lodge: our own Daniela Bonanno lived on the property when her husband worked as the general manager.
Whether you’ve been around the safari circuit a time or two—maybe even stayed at Singita Ebony Lodge of fore—or are dreaming of your perfect first-time luxury African safari, Singita Ebony Lodge’s reinvention will have you yearning for sundowners and khaki.
If you go now, you will be taking part in a monumental moment in Singita history: Singita Ebony Lodge in Sabi Sand private game reserve is the premiere Singita property, and this is the first time it’s received a total renovation. Much was at stake. But the design team Cecile & Boyd, who joined forces with architect Sally Tsiliyiannis, took on the task of reimagining the iconic property for the future with gusto.
The tactic: embrace quintessential safari style but elevate with decidedly contemporary materials, forms, and design techniques. They spliced canvas-sided suite tents with floor-to-ceiling glass walls (or did away with walls altogether in some cases) for infinity views. Pavilion decks suspended over the Sand River mean guests can feel in the thick of the wild while relaxing in complete safety. In a subtle but thoughtful nod to the power of safari to help preserve and protect the African outback and its creatures, rather than compromise them, throws and pillows screen printed with zebra and giraffe motifs were used in place of actual skins.
The grandest addition is the new main lodge, which is totally geared towards the traveler Singita has dubbed the ‘New Nomad.’ This is a safari goer who wants all the solitude of being in the bush, but all the necessary hosting tools. Singita Ebony Lodge nailed this with a single piece of furniture: a giant marble and iron table that acts as a communal desk, private dining table, or impromptu bar. Don’t worry, there are also the requisite open-air sitting rooms and fire-pits we all want and love in a good luxury African safari lodge.
