We all have passions and dreams that more often than not get buried beneath the more “immediate” needs of everyday life. Even the most transient thought of pursuing these goals can make us come alive, but how many of us actually take the leap of faith? I’m on my way—I’m headed to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this July to fulfill a lifelong dream of mine and in the process am raising money for Flying Kites, a Brooklyn based non-profit which provides housing and a world class education to Kenya’s most distressed children. I have been volunteering my time to help with Expedition Everest which is a very special fundraising campaign that is also aiming to raise funds for the Flying Kites Center located just outside of Nairobi.
It has been a personal goal for a long time to take this journey and it means so much to me to be able to fulfill a dream of mine while also giving these children a chance to pursue their most revered dreams. I see this as an opportunity to not only provide as much help as possible to the children at the center in the short term, but to also develop a deeper connection to the children and to the organization so that I can continue contribute fully and whole heartedly with the Everest Campaign when I return home.
With an Everest scale goal of 1.8 million dollars, the Expedition Everest Campaign aims to fund the expansion of the Flying Kites Center in Nairobi, allowing them to open their doors to more children in need. With an expedition to Mount Everest set for the spring of 2014, Toby Storie-Pugh, founder and executive director of Flying Kites; Mike Chambers, director of the Adventure Challenges program; and their Kenyan teammate (who hopes to be the first Kenyan to summit Everest!), plan to fulfill their ultimate dream–or their Everest–of conquering the tallest mountain in the world while also setting the example to these children that anything is possible. I am thrilled to be a part of such a special campaign and through my own fundraising initiatives I hope to join the team on their trek into base camp.
Taking on this awe-inspiring challenge means achieving one of my most sacred dreams, or my Everest, and I invite you to take a moment to answer the question: “What’s your Everest?”
